Microsoft Warns of Upcoming Deprecation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in Windows

Microsoft's recent reminder about the impending (and final) deprecation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in Windows warned that enterprise administrators need to be prepared as it's set to have ripple effects.

Warning:  If your company is using TLS 1.0 or 1.1 in Mircrosoft Windows, your "voicemail-to-email" functionality is going to stop working soon….

Microsoft's recent reminder about the impending (and final) deprecation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in Windows warned that enterprise administrators need to be prepared as it's set to have a ripple effect across various enterprise applications (that Microsoft said were “expected to be broken”), potentially disrupting operations for those that are not.

What's Changing?
TLS, the backbone of secure communication on the Internet, is evolving. Microsoft's push towards disabling TLS 1.0 and 1.1 by default in Windows is a response to their outdated security measures with the transition to more robust versions like TLS 1.2 and 1.3 being critical. However, Microsoft was continuing to support the older standards with a “Legacy” service allowing for time to transition. This interim solution is now finally being retired, fully ending support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1.

Who's Affected?
A range of enterprise applications are expected to face disruptions. Notably, SQL Server editions (2014, 2016, and 2012 under Extended Security Updates) might require immediate attention and updates. Even certain security applications and older versions of browsers like Apple's Safari 5.1.7 for Windows are on the watchlist. Microsoft's stance is clear: "Re-enabling TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1...should only be done as a last resort." The path forward is to update or replace incompatible applications promptly.

The Underestimated Impact on Legacy Systems
While broad technical challenges are daunting, it's crucial not to overlook the nuanced impacts on older legacy systems, particularly in communication infrastructure like older PBX platforms. Functions like voicemail-to-email, often taken for granted, rely on these protocols and are at risk. The loss of such features can disrupt daily business communications and operations, reflecting the hidden costs of outdated technology.
